Health Insurance Options for Those Who Do Not Qualify for Tax Credits
If you do not qualify for Tax Credits (APTCs) through the Marketplace to buy your own health insurance there are even more health insurance options available to you. And the enrollment process is simpler, since we do not have to enroll you in a plan through healthcare dot gov (which adds extra confusing, frustrating layers of silliness to the enrollment process).
See below for the top 3 health insurance plan options:
The Top 3 Avenues of Buying Your Own Health Insurance If You Do Not Qualify For Tax Credits:
ACA Health Insurance Without a Tax Credit
You can purchase all of the same health insurance plans that are Affordable Care Act compliant and available on the Marketplace, plus more options, without a tax credit.
We can enroll you in the plans directly through the insurance company, skipping the frustrations of healthcare dot gov.
If You Have a Business, a Group Health Insurance Plan
If you own a business we can also explore group health insurance plans for employee sizes as low as 1 (if Inc.) employee.
Premium costs are similar to individual plans, there are more plan choices and you can deduct the premium cost as a business expense.
Short-Term Health Insurance For Up to 4 Months
Short-term health insurance, designed to cover you between job-based coverage, waiting for Medicare, or open enrollment, might be the best choice if you need a plan for just a few months.
If you think this might be a good option see the below page for all of the details.
We Work With All Health Insurers in North Carolina, Including…
Health Insurance Without a Tax Credit
Even if you do not qualify for a tax credit through the Marketplace you are still able to choose any available individual and family health insurance plans. Here is a secret many do not realize….you can choose an individual health insurance plan available in the Marketplace, plus other plan options some insurance companies offer only outside of the Marketplace!
So there are dozens of plans available from 7 different health insurers. Plenty of choices! And because the plans are Affordable Care Act compliant you know that you can choose any of them without any health questions asked, medical underwriting, nor are there any pre-existing conditions exclusions.

Group Health Insurance for Your Business
We work with many small business owners, consultants, “gig economy” workers, self-employed families, etc. Many times their income is over the threshold for tax credits, and so we recommend looking into a group health insurance plan for their coverage.
Just about any business qualifies.
We can enroll group health insurance plans with as few as 2 employees, no matter how your business is organized, and with as few as 1 full-time employee if your business is incorporated.
The cost is less than individual plans.
Insurers see group health insurance plans with 1-50 employees as a much more stable offering than individual plans (whose details change often).
And that means that costs of group plans are currently less than for individual plans when you compare plans with the same benefits (most insurers offer the same plan designs in individual and group models).
The cost is a deductible biz expense.
You can deduct the amount the business pays toward health insurance as a business expense, just like with office supplies or lease payments. This helps lower the cost.
And the plan can grow with your business
Maybe your business it just you for now. That is OK, we can choose a group health insurance plan if your business is incorporated.
In the future you may begin to add additional full-time employees as your business grows. You will be able to offer this same health insurance plan to them also, your built in employee benefits plan.
You can enroll in your own health insurance plan throughout the year.
Health Insurance SEP
You can enroll in an ACA health insurance plan throughout the year if you have a Special Enrollment Period.
SEPs include losing job-based health insurance, turning 26 and losing coverage, moving to a new county or state, getting married, getting separated or divorced, having a baby, losing Medicaid eligibility, etc.
Health Insurance AEP
If you do not have a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) then to choose an ACA Plan without a tax credit you will need to wait until the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) to enroll, November 1 - December 15, for coverage to begin the next January 1.
We can set up a short-term health plan to cover you in the interim.
Short-Term Health
You can begin short-term health any day of the year, and coverage can begin as soon as the next day!
That said, we begin most plans at the beginning of a month, to coincide with other coverage ending.
Group Health Insurance
You can start a group health insurance plan at any first of the month, in any of the 12 months in a year.
