ACA Health Insurance for UNC Health

The Best Health Insurance Plans for Individuals and Families Who Use UNC Health

Health insurers, working to make health insurance costs more affordable while following Affordable Care Act regulations, have built smaller provider networks focusing on a local health system. In the greater Triangle area of North Carolina you can choose an insurer that focuses on UNC Health.

If your favorite doctors and providers are in the UNC Health system read this page to see how Chip can offer information and detailed plan recommendations, help you choose a plan, enroll you, and work as your servicing agent throughout the year for help with questions, any problems that arise and renewal ideas.

Health Insurers We Work With That Are In-Network with UNC Health

First step…How will you purchase a plan?

Will you choose the plan “On-Marketplace” (with an instant tax credit to help lower the the premium costs)? Or “Off-Marketplace” (without a tax credit)?
This is an important step, to determine if you qualify to receive a tax credit, or not. Read below to determine eligibility.

On-Marketplace

Will you receive instant tax credits to lower costs?

Tax credits, officially called “Advanced Premium Tax Credits” or APTCs, are figured in a formula that takes into account the ages of each covered person, family size, zip code, and the family's income (on your tax return).

Will your family’s annual income this current year (you will have to estimate) fall under these income thresholds corresponding to the number of people in your family?

Note: Other information being equal, the income thresholds vary by your current age (the older your age the higher the threshold, the younger you are, the lower the threshold). Here we show an average age of 45 for the adult family members (Contact Chip below and he will calculate the income threshold specific to your family).

-approximately $76,000 for a family of 1
-approximately $153,000 for a family of 2
-approximately $204,000 for a family of 3
-approximately $245,000 for a family of 4
-approximately $280,000 for a family of 5
-approximately $290,000 for a family of 6

Second question…Will you or your spouse NOT have access to an employer-sponsored health insurance plan through work? (regardless of if you choose the employer coverage)

If your family income is under the threshold and you answer “ no” to the second question you will receive instant tax credits! This could bring the monthly premium cost down by 20, 40, 60%. For some the premium cost is even $0.00 monthly!

We’ll need to enroll you through the healthcare dot gov marketplace to lock in those tax credits. Chip can do this enrollment work for you.

Off-Marketplace

Will you not receive tax credits?

If your family’s income is over the threshold, OR you or your spouse have access to an employer-sponsored health insurance plan, you are not eligible for tax credits.

But you are still eligible to choose your own individual or family health insurance plan from the health insurers that feature Duke Health and WakeMed in their provider networks!

We can enroll you directly with the insurer and skip the frustrations of enrolling the healthcare dot gov way. Chip can do this enrollment work for you.

UNC Health Network Plans We Recently Helped Clients With

Below are 3 success stories we have found on the Marketplace in helping our customers obtain their own health insurance plan:

A 26 Year Old Post-Grad Scientist in Chapel Hill

Yuri, 26, has finished graduate school and is working on a post-grad directive in a UNC lab. Health insurance is not offered as an employee benefit through the internship.

We calculated his tax credit, which takes care of most of the premium cost, and Yuri chose the Blue Cross NC Silver level Enhanced health insurance plan, at a monthly premium cost of just $28.49.

Preventative care / wellness, what Yuri utilizes most, is covered 100%. Diagnostic visits at his PCP will be $10 copays (the first 3 will be $0 copays!). And he can visit his favorite UNC Health providers near his workplace.

A Retired Couple Picks a Bronze Plan with UNC Health

A 61 year old couple from Boston who recently relocated to Chapel Hill, and who are retired and living on savings, needed to purchase their own plan. A local friend suggested establishing provider relationships with UNC Health doctors.

Chip explained all the benefits of the Bronze Standard 7500 copay plan, which seemed to work well for both of them, below average users of medical services. Since they currently have no earned income, just retirement income at $60k annually, the tax credit was larger than usual, and reduce the monthly premium cost down to $0.00.

Yes, $0.00! The tax credit covers all of the cost.

A Family of 4 Health Chooses Their Own Health Insurance

A family of 4 living in Briar Chapel in Chatham County needed their own health insurance plan, as neither spouses workplace offered an employer-sponsored health insurance plan..

The family; ages, 41, 39, 12, and 7, with an annual income of $105k, receive a tax credit at over $975 monthly. They chose the Blue Cross NC Bronze 4000 Copay Plan with UNC Health, at a $261.37 monthly cost.

Now the family can visit all UNC Health providers near their home and even the independent pediatrician offices nearby, and pay copays for primary care visits and prescriptions. Preventative care is covered at 100%.
