Medicare + Supplemental Insurance
If your 65th birthday is soon, or are 65+ and moving from employer health insurance to Medicare, or are comparing current coverage to alternatives...
You may feel overwhelmed. Frustrated too! I guess you are experiencing one or both of these scenarios:
-You are receiving mail from insurers and agents daily. The mail pieces differ in color and size, but they all have the same aim…to sell their company's product. Any question that you ask, their answer will be, "My insurance company's plan is your answer!"
-Or you are looking through the internet for information on Medicare, Medicare Supplement, Part D Rx, Medicare Advantage, etc. And again, they are hawking one answer for each one of your questions, "My insurance company's plan is your answer!"
There are two main reasons this is not helpful to you at all.
Many Choices Better Than One
With 30+ supplemental plans available, why would they assume their choice is the only one? Wouldn't it be nice for someone to compare ALL choices to make sure you are indeed choosing the best plan?
Information, Not a Sales Pitch
Those advertisements don’t answer the first question you should be asking, which is “What is Medicare and supplemental insurance, what does it cover, and how will it benefit me?”
What is Helpful: Education and Answering your Questions in a Meeting (in person in my office in Southern Village, a phone call or Zoom)
(1): Explanation of Medicare
I take the time to explain what Medicare is, each benefit of Parts A and B. We discuss what Medicare pays, and the amount of medical expenses left for you to pay. I also explain how to easily apply for Medicare, the timing, and when you will receive your Medicare ID card.
(2): Supplemental Insurance
We talk about the two “avenues” of supplemental insurance; choosing a Medicare Supplement (“Medigap”) plan along with Part D prescription drug plan. Or Medicare Advantage plans. We will compare the pros / cons of each type so you can choose what is best for you.
(3): Prescription Coverage
We discuss, with your permission, any prescriptions you take, and the local pharmacy you utilize. Then I will research how your Rx will be covered, to help recommend the best plan. In short, we determine the plan(s) that will pay the most toward your prescriptions.
(4): Comparing Multiple Insurers
Once we determine the best plan design for your situation we compare rates of all available insurers, so you can choose the most cost efficient plan. (this is the step where most insurance agents are trying to start in their sales presentation, but with only one company offered!)
(5): Enrolling and Confirmation
Plan choices made, we can complete the enrollment (paper forms, by phone, or online, your choice). I enroll you with the insurer(s) and send you confirmation of the coverage details and start date. I then work to get your ID cards to you before the start date of your coverage.
(6): Ongoing Help and Service
I am then listed as your servicing agent, always available to answer your questions and advocate for you if any problems arise. During the annual enrollment period each Fall we can review plan changes to see if you should choose another plan for the new year.
If these steps would be helpful to you, contact me today. I look forward to talking with you and answering your questions.
